The Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) management training program is a key component of International Labour Organisation (ILO)s efforts in the area of small enterprise development. SIYB contributes to the creation of quality jobs in small enterprises through improved business performance. It concentrates on improving the technical and management skills of small entrepreneurs since these are of vital importance for the growth of small enterprises.

SIYB - TOT is geared towards capacity building for the Trainers. This involves a comprehensive training intervention which includes: selection and training needs analysis of the trainers; strengthening of their business knowledge and skills understanding; and training in Adult Education methodology in order to enable them to deliver quality practical business training to existing and potential entrepreneurs with both in the training-room and on-the-job.

»Compile base-line data for monitoring and evaluation of their performances
»Group trainees according to their training needs and learning abilities
»Design an appropriate training intervention for target entrepreneurs using flexible building blocks/mix-and-match approach
»Conduct training-room based modular Generate Your Business Idea (GYBI)
Start Your Business (SYB) and Improve Your Business (IYB) training of entrepreneurs
»Evaluate the effectiveness of training and its immediate impact on the entrepreneurs attitudes, Business knowledge,business behavior, acquisition of practical skills and business performance
»Carry out post-training counseling of entrepreneurs
»Organize and facilitate business improvement groups
»Conduct refresher training of entrepreneurs and provide in-business assistance, all aimed at improving the business management skills of the trainees.
»Monitor trainees performance and evaluate the cost-effectiveness and impact of training interventions.
»Network with other SED providers for such other assistance as trainees may need to enhance the effectiveness of their training and to enable them to grow.


Comprehensive and easy to use Trainers' guides support the training materials. They are designed to help the Trainer deliver effective and high quality training. The Trainers guides contain guidelines for designing and applying the training, training methodology, training duration, monitoring and evaluation and structured session plans. The Training of Trainers involves a cost-effective yet comprehensive system to monitor the trainers' performances and accredit them at different levels in accordance with the acquired competence.

» Government agencies responsible for employment creation, poverty alleviation, women and youth affairs, post retirement training, training and development etc.
